Gaps Between Baby Teeth Are Usually a Good Sign, Not a Problem

It is common, and even a good sign, to have spaces between your baby’s teeth.

Here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t worry:

  • Adult teeth will eventually come in, and these teeth will fall out.
  • Baby teeth act as spaceholders for adult teeth, but they do not occupy as much space in the arch.
  • Your baby’s jaw is still growing and changing.

Of course, baby teeth (even though they will be lost) are still important. They help with chewing and speech development. These teeth mustn’t be lost too soon.

Talk to Your Pediatric Dentist in Scottsdale, AZ

If you notice other oral issues, such as too many teeth, shifting teeth, or teeth that seem too close together, it’s important to talk to your child’s dentist. Likewise, if you notice spacing after their adult teeth come in, talk to us.

In some cases, tooth spacing can be linked to thumbsucking, pacifier use, or a tight frenulum (a piece of skin between the upper lip’s center and upper gum). A tight or thick frenulum can sometimes cause a gap between the two front teeth.

Even in these cases, don’t be alarmed. Most gaps close on their own, or the dentist can assist with issues like ongoing thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use, or a tight frenulum.

Caring for Baby’s Teeth

  • You should bring your baby to the dentist around their first birthday, or sooner if you have concerns.
  • You should bring your child to the dentist every six months for checkups and monitoring.
  • You should clean your baby’s tooth or teeth and gums with a warm cloth between bottles, and you can also gently brush these newly erupted teeth.
