5 Common Dental Emergencies Kids Experience

Kids are active, curious, and sometimes clumsy—that’s part of the fun! But it also means dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them. Here are some of the most common dental issues we treat.
Knocked-Out Teeth
A knocked-out tooth needs immediate attention, even if it's a baby tooth. Please call us ASAP!
Chipped Teeth
Cracking into a hard snack or candy or taking a fall on the ball field can lead to fractured teeth.
Severe Toothache
Intense dental pain could be a sign of a cavity, infection, or something more serious.
Dental Abscess
A painful swelling or bump near the tooth or gums may mean an infection.
Object Stuck Between Teeth
Small toys, food, or other objects can sometimes get wedged between teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

First things first: please don’t panic. For patients of record experiencing a dental emergency after our regular hours, take a deep breath and call our Scottsdale dental office. We’ll provide clear guidance to help you manage the situation and, if needed, arrange to see your child as soon as possible.

For Severe Emergencies

For severe emergencies—like heavy bleeding or severe swelling—it’s important to act quickly. These situations may require immediate care from our team or at the nearest emergency room.

In the case of a knocked-out tooth, try to gently rinse it with water (don’t scrub), place it in a glass of milk or saline, and give our office a call. And if we don't respond right away, head to an urgent care or ER. Acting fast could save the tooth.

For Less Urgent Issues

For other less urgent issues, like a mild toothache or a chipped tooth, you can usually keep your child comfortable until we can see them by using over-the-counter pain relievers and a cold compress for swelling.

We’re Here to Help!

We know that dental emergencies can feel overwhelming, especially when they happen at the most inconvenient times (because, let’s face it, kids and good timing don’t always mix).

At Tatum Pediatric Dentistry, we’re here to guide you through even the trickiest situations with calm, compassionate care. If you need assistance, please give us a call.

The first thing to do is remain calm. A knocked-out tooth is a scary situation, but you have the skills and expertise of your Scottsdale emergency dentist to rely on.

Next, contact your team at Tatum Pediatric Dentistry at (602) 788-4873 right away. We have the best chance of saving your child's tooth the quicker we can treat it. If their emergency occurs outside our normal business hours, there are instructions over the phone on how to reach our emergency contact.

Finally, transport your child's tooth with care. Try not to handle it too much; placing it back in its socket is best if you can. If not, use saliva or milk to keep the tooth moist while you get to the dentist. Be careful not to touch the roots.

Treatment Options at Tatum Pediatric Dentistry

Our dentists will discuss the best treatment options for your child if we can't save their permanent tooth. One possibility is making them a retainer with a prosthetic tooth that they can wear until they're old enough for a dental implant.

Being proactive and acting calmly and quickly if a tooth gets knocked out is the best way to possibly save your child's natural tooth.

What to Expect During a Dental Emergency Visit

We know dental emergencies can be overwhelming for kids and parents alike, but we’re here to make the process as smooth as possible. Here’s what happens when you visit:

  • Initial Assessment – First, we’ll take a close look at your child’s teeth and gums to figure out what’s causing the problem—no rushed decisions—just a clear, thoughtful plan of action.
  • Gentle Treatment – Kids need extra care during emergencies, so we use calming techniques and a kind approach to make sure they feel safe every step of the way.
  • Communication – We explain everything to you and your child in a way that’s easy to understand. We always offer clear guidance to put everyone at ease.Mushrooms with flowers and leaves
  • Post-Treatment Care – Before you head home, we’ll walk you through simple aftercare steps to help your little one recover quickly and comfortably.

From the smallest concerns to big tooth troubles, we’re here to help your child feel better fast and ensure parents can rest a little easier. At Tatum Pediatric Dentistry, we’re dedicated to turning emergencies into healthy, happy smiles!

5 Tips to Prevent Dental Emergencies

While not all mishaps can be avoided, you can reduce the risk of dental emergencies with these tips:

  1. Encourage kids to wear mouthguards during sports.
  2. Avoid giving hard candies, ice, or other tough-to-bite foods.
  3. Teach kids proper brushing and flossing to maintain strong, healthy teeth.
  4. Schedule regular dental checkups to catch small issues before they become big problems.
  5. Supervise younger children to prevent accidents during play.
